Sun-drenched

(Coat and culottes: ASOS; Shirt: New Look; Shoes: Topshop; Faux-fur stole: Helen Moore; Bag: Marc by Marc Jacobs; Watch: Michael Kors)

Watching a very beautiful sunrise for what might possibly be the last early morning workday outfit shot of the year...it's so darn dark! But the sun does set off burgundy so nicely I can't complain when it's only fleeting.

29.11.15

In a Rug

(Shoes and coat: ASOS; Skirt: Topshop; Cardigan: H&M; Belt: from Primark top; Necklace: Dorothy Perkins; Bag: vintage; Watch: Michael Kors)

Taking the 'high fashion mad old lady' aesthetic to new heights with this Gucci-esque skirt. I've never had much luck with skirts like this; they always feel a little frumpy when compared to the 'elegantly styled with a grey poloneck and waif-like limbs' version I see in the magazines. I just need to play with my proportions a little bit.

28.11.15

Snug as a Bug

(Coat: ASOS; Shirt: Zara; Trousers: H&M; Boots: Topshop; Bag: Marc by Marc Jacobs; Jewellery: Thomas Sabo)

Woohoo it finally got cold enough to wear the big furry monster coat of dreams! I decided against wearing a wide-brimmed hat; that might have been a bit too far...but otherwise, full-on '70s with paisley, flares and fluff!

27.11.15

Librarian Off-Day

(Top and shoes: ASOS; Culottes: Topshop; Bag: vintage; Belt: from Primark top; Jacket: Shrimps)

Hurrah, finally something that goes well with these culottes! I'm really enjoying this whole wacky librarian aesthetic of clashing prints together...and also a more relaxed way of wearing this Shrimps jacket, treating it more like a cardigan than a coat.

26.11.15

Pop Art Suede

(Coat and skirt: ASOS; Top and boots: Topshop; Bag: Moss in Camden Passage; Watch: Michael Kors; Ring: Tessa Metcalfe)

Oh how I've longed for this skirt. From the first tantalising glimpse in an advertorial in the August ELLE, it was love at first sight. But, as often happens, the first impression is misleading. In fact, a skirt that photographed burgundy actually turned out to be...brown. A very nice brown, but resolutely brown. Not even russet.

Reader, I bought it anyway. Ill-advised perhaps - a side-split pencil skirt generally only works if you've got waif-like proportions and I did wear a short slip underneath for the sake of modesty. But otherwise, happy customer here. Plus the white panel is actually a POCKET.

25.11.15

Dark Suit

(Suit and top: ASOS; Shoes: M&S; Bag: Marc by Marc Jacobs; Coat: Simply Be; Necklace: Dinny Hall; Watch: Michael Kors)

Yes these are terrible photos - it wasn't a good week for mornings. Dreary and dark; classic winter. Here's hoping next week picks up a little!

24.11.15

Polo

(Dress and boots: Topshop; Bag and top: ASOS; Watch: Michael Kors; Ring: Tessa Metcalfe; Belt: old)

Jumping all over this pinafore/polo-neck thing like there's no tomorrow...

23.11.15

Gucci Girl

(Jumper: ASOS; Shirt: Primark; Skirt: Zara; Shoes: M&S; Necklace: Dorothy Perkins; Bag: vintage; Pom-pom keyring: Topshop; Ring: Tessa Metcalfe; Watch: Michael Kors)

Pink and green again! I fancied being a Prada/Gucci girl for the day, at least in colour scheme if nothing else.

21.11.15

Big Floaty Dress

(Faux-fur stole: Topshop: Dress and boots: ASOS; Bag: Marc by Marc Jacobs)

Because a blusterous day is the perfect day to wear a maxidress. ASOS is doing great work with interesting neckline cutout details and while this dress is a little too long for my liking (you need heels, all I'm saying) it's another one that looks much better on than on the hanger. So off the hanger it comes!

20.11.15

Eclectic Feel

(Jacket: Shrimps; Jumper and dress: ASOS; Boots: Topshop; Bag: vintage; Watch: Michael Kors; Jewellery: Thomas Sabo)

When unsure how to style and item, just copy what they do on the website? Sure, why not? And this is much better than trying to make the dress full boho I think. Boho will work perfectly in the spring or summer, but for now I'm really enjoying how suede has become almost denim-like in its neutrality. Which justified my throwing in three prints and three textures in total here! Snakeskin boots, croc-skin bag (both faker than fake of course) and a faux-leopard jacket? It's an eclectic dream.

19.11.15

Rose and Burgundy

(Jumper: Topshop; Jeans and belt: ASOS; Faux-fur stole:Helen Moore; Bag: Marc by Marc Jacobs; Trainers: Nike; Watch: Michael Kors; Jewellery: Thomas Sabo)

Just a little something quick for a casual weekend day out that required warmth against the crazy winds, sensible shoes for walking but, of course, a little bit of something to make sure I stay my polished, co-ordinated self!

18.11.15

Preppy and Print

(Coat: ASOS; Skirt: Topshop: Jumper: H&M; Shirt: Primark; Shoes: M&S; Bag: vintage; Watch: Michael Kors; Jewellery: Thomas Sabo)

Wore a rucksack on my way to work while wearing this. You know how rucksacks tend to ruck your coat up with them? Yeah, that was fun. Nevertheless I like the mix of colours here, coupled with it being just about cool enough to wear a faux-fur coat. Sigh...

16.11.15

Printed and Pink

(Stole, jumper and trousers: ASOS; Boots: Topshop; Bag: vintage; Watch: Michael Kors; Jewellery: Thomas Sabo)

Ok, the last of the stripy jumper haul (for the moment) is this one - muted leaf green and hot pink is not a combination I'd naturally have reached for before but in the spirit of Prada's iconic AW15 collection I am now all in favour of strange colour pairings. And turns out it's actually a pretty neat one. Well, if it's good enough for flowers...Only big issue, FYI, is that the fabric on this one is HELLA itchy around the collar. Might have to sneak a shirt underneath it.

14.11.15

Saturday Suit

(Suit and belt: ASOS; Gilet, top and shoes: Topshop; Bag: vintage; Watch: Michael Kors; Jewellery: Thomas Sabo)

You know that saying 'blue and green should never be seen'? Sod it.

13.11.15

Bring It Back

(Coat, polo neck and culottes: ASOS; Bag: Marc by Marc Jacobs; Shoes: Topshop; Watch: Michael Kors; Jewellery: Thomas Sabo)

Hurrah for an abundance of browns and reds in my wardrobe that mean that these amazing culottes can come out again! One of my favourite buys from last year (they do show up water stains quite obviously but they're so flattering I can't fault them too much for that), resurrected in the guise of the perfect accompaniment to what will surely be one of my favourite buys this year!

12.11.15

Texture

(Top, gilet and skirt: Topshop; Belt: ASOS; Faux-fur scarf: New Look; Shoes: Orla Kiely for Clarks; Bag: Marc by Marc Jacobs; Watch: Michael Kors; Ring: Tessa Metcalfe)

Red and greens! It must be coming up to the festive season...or just an effort to brighten up a moody top with this gilet. Any excuse, really.

11.11.15

Super Suit

(Suit: ASOS; Jumper and shoes: Topshop; Watch: Michael Kors; Jewellery: Thomas Sabo)

And the umbrella is Primark! A very very quick snap as I was trying to catch the earlier bus given how the rain seems to double the traffic and number of bus-takers, and it was raining too hard to ditch the umbrella! So there we go.  I'm now slightly obsessed with teal and the suit is part of a minor ASOS haul - it's crepe so works across all seasons, the trousers have belt-loops and are the perfect cropped length and the whole thing fits like a glove. Perfect.

10.11.15

Soft Furnishings

(Top and trousers: Topshop; Bag: Marc by Marc Jacobs; Trainers: Nike; Faux-fur stole: Helen Moore; Watch: Michael Kors; Jewellery: Thomas Sabo)

So I finally did it! Put on the loudest suit ever and wandered around like an animated pair of curtains. I ended up swapping the trainers for heels in the end (as the overall effect was slightly dumpy) but the curtain effect wasn't lessened by any stretch!

9.11.15

Foggy

(Polo neck: ASOS; Skirt and shoes: Topshop; Bag: vintage; Faux-fur stole: Helen Moore; Watch: Michael Kors; Ring: Tessa Metcalfe)

How cooooool is this spooky fog? I was half-expecting some kind of mythic monster to come looming out of it (ok hoping and praying) but nope, just the usual houses and traffic. It's still unseasonably (or in fact very seasonably these days) warm so coats aren't always required, but since I'm now expanding my collection of 'so in right now' stripey jumpers and polonecks with this lovely one it means I can show it off!

7.11.15

Ridiculous

(Gilet and jeans: ASOS; Shirt: New Look; Belt: old; Bag: vintage; Trainers: Nike; Watch: Michael Kors; Jewellery: Thomas Sabo)

That gang at ASOS are a canny bunch; encouraging their stylist team to build brands around themselves, or employing people with existing brands built? Whichever it is, I fell for this quite frankly ridiculous gilet after spotting it on Megan (an Alexa Chung/Elisabeth Olsen hybrid) and decided it had to be mine during my latest spree. Like the Topshop green one, I was delighted to discover it also has pockets.

I was less delighted with the jeans I'm wearing here - ASOS ran out of the waist size I normally buy but find a little too tight when sitting and always find it squashes my bum like some weird sort of pancake, so I had to go one up. While they now fit comfortably around the hips, unsurprisingly this fast fashion house hasn't figured out that women often have wider hips than waists. This is the situation I'm dealing with. A belt is essential.

6.11.15

Bill the Butcher

(Dress, bag and boots: ASOS; Shirt: River Island; Belt: from Primark top: Watch: Michael Kors; Jewellery: Thomas Sabo)

This answers my question about whether this would look good with a black top - should have stuck with a white one. I chickened out after reading the 'colour transfer' warning in the label (a few days after ignoring the 'dry clean only' label on a Topshop jacket that resolutely did not become wrecked after a cold wash) and decided to give this dress its maiden outing against black. It's been all over ASOS' campaigns and I've had it for a while, but like too much of my wardrobe it just gets 'saved' for a special occasion. In reality it looks a bit like a very stylish butchers' apron, but is very flattering I think and will work just as well styled in a more 'dorky' way a la Wednesday's outfit as it will with a very loyal-to-the-trend white shirt.

5.11.15

Two Prints

(Shirt: Zara; Jeans, belt and bag: ASOS; Boots and top: Topshop; Watch: Michael Kors; Jewellery: Thomas Sabo)

Didn't quite work, this one, I have to say. Sometimes jeans are the perfect backdrop and sometimes they aren't, and sometimes my massive mop of hair just manages to make what would look chic and slick on anyone else just look a bit...confused. But I do like the juxtaposition of the two prints on top (closer look below); perhaps next time with a simpler bottom half.

4.11.15

Librarian Chic

(Top and skirt: Topshop; Faux-fur stole: Helen Moore; Bag: vintage; Shoes: Orla Kiely for Clarks; Belt: ASOS; Watch: Michael Kors; Jewellery: Thomas Sabo)

I LOVED this outfit. It encompasses the Gucci/Prada/Wes Anderson-led geek chic thing that's dominating every fashion spread while managing to be incredibly easy to wear. Shout-out to the ultimate ugly-pretty shoes and this jumper; the first of many stripey jumpers that have finally snuck into my wardrobe after me avoiding them, simply since everyone else was buying them. Normally the kind of thing that has me reaching for my credit card...

2.11.15

It's So Fluffy I'm Gonna Die!

(Gilet, shoes and faux-fur keyring on bag: Topshop; Skirt and shirt: Zara; Belt: from Primark top; Bag: Prada; Watch: Michael Kors; Jewellery: Thomas Sabo)

Sometimes it's nice just to be 'ladylike' (speechmarks essential because the term is total bollocks in this enlightened age) but sometimes you also want to be snuggled up like a small child's bear or like that unicorn in Despicable Me. I read that clashing textures are so in this season, so here we've got faux-leather, faux-croc and faux-fur. Style clash and print clash, with this season's surprise hit colour - green - taking centre stage: nailed it.
